Restaurant Review - Rivercafe Clarky Quay

Went to Rivercafe on our nations' national day Aug 9! On the suggestion of my friend Jesslyn (directly behind me in the pic). Her sister Jerrine and my buddy Dr. Matthew were there as well. As you can tell from the pic (yes its small...but i think you can see) i ordered eggs, toast and cheese... The rest ordered pancakes of various kinds. Uh.. pancakes are nice... if you are post workout carb-upping haha. Fruit, or bacon with flour nicely arranged on a plate always tastes good:). As for myself, eggs and cheese and brown bread is just what I normally eat at home... this just costs 10x more. The average price for a breakfast dish is about $10.

The ambiance is nice, its next to the river, and its a less crowded part of the city so it is nice. They serve many kinds of wine (as if i can tell the differnce... wine is good for marinading MEAT to make it more tasty... muwhahah) so its a good place if thats your kind of thing!

All in all its nice for a quiet morning meal but there arent many Macho meat foods to choose from. not really a place I'd go again anytime soon if its just food we are considering.

Hero? Do I (or you) want to be one...

Today I was a a seminar by an excellent speaker called Benny Ho. He was talking to teachers (duh its teachers' day) about being a hero in their job (which is heroic cos it is shaping lives and destiny of the future generation). I was just reflecting on the 3 types of hero which he mentioned and which type i am (and which type I would like to be more of) I will use Movie examples of each.

The 3 types:

1. Accidental heros
Blur In, Blur out, somehow becomes a hero
e.g. Forest Gump.

2. Situational Heros
They are of good character and abiltiy, and they respond correctly to crisis in the right way at the right time.
e.g. Batman - parents murdered, then devotes his life to the worthy cause of fighting crime

3. Intentional Heros
They live their life because they know their destiny is to be a hero and they purposely live and act so that this destiny comes true
Closest example i can think of is Superman... His father from Krypton sent him to earth to be its savior (movie review here) and he lives in that destiny and reality.

This is not an ego thing to say ...but you know what... I want to be one... a type 3 intentional one! Hero to atheltes of all kinds, to the next genration and to my future wife and family. I'm not about to start leaping tall buildings in a single bound (but i do work on my vertical leap) but I am determining in my heart that I will make decisions that build good habits and character into me so that those will become part of me forever. In times of trials, type 2 or type 1 situational/chance hero characteristics will come out as well. So uh... i guess i want to have all 3 types but feel that if we work on type 3, type 1 and 2 come kind of... "free" with the package!

Anybody can be a hero! But you must determine and choose to be one despite the training that it takes, and the responsiblity that it entails. BTW i think a really good "test" is when a hero gets an award... Does the Award add value to the hero's "portfolio"? Or does the Hero's recieveing the award add value to the award?

Tis Teachers' Day

Im blogging from the Mariot Hotel Singapore where I'm the photographer at a teachers' conference on this teacher's day (thats our speaker Mr Eugene Seow along with our Guest of Honor Minister of state for Education Liu Tuck Yew .

The theme is "celebrate teachers". How awesome. Sure I was not the most obedient or school lovin student but I have to agree that teachers' need to be celebrated. Its a really tough job and (although the money is decent here in Singapore) it has to be a calling and not just a job... The responsiblity to the next generation is so great, the pressure from schools, exams, and parents is so diverse. Some of my best friends are teachers. They do struggle but they persevere and I am 100% sure that they are AWESOME teachers. I wish my teachers were as good and caring when I was in school.

Haha I always joke that some of my atheletic ability was developed in the classroom where my messy work resulted in books and chalk dusters being thrown my way by ahem.. teachers haha. *Dodge* *Weave* *Duck* see that duster fly right by!... see thats where i learn some footwork and agility:) so i still can be thankful!

To all teachers, have an awesome teachers' day, I know your job is not easy and with the troubles in the family and in marriages all over your job will only get tougher. But please stick with it!

You are absolutely necessary and precious! Thank you all.
